May is Bike Month! Join the Bike Month Challenge

What is the Bike Month Challenge?

The Bike Month Challenge is all about making every ride count! And how do we make every ride count? By logging them all with the Love to Ride app.

Love to Ride’s brand new app has the power to make bike riding better for all by generating anonymous data that can inform better infrastructure decisions.

Throughout May, riders everywhere are encouraged and supported to ride bikes. Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Everyone is invited – from regular riders to people who haven’t been on a bike in years (or ever!)

  • Rate your routes by ‘painting’ with your finger to provide feedback about your comfort levels on each section of your ride! Every ride logged with the app can contribute to anonymous data that planners can use to make better bike infrastructure decisions.

  • You can ride anywhere, any time! Whether it’s to work, to the store, or a spin around the park, every ride paints a picture of what biking is like in your community.

  • Every ride earns points - and points mean prizes! Earn one point for every mile and 10 points for every day you ride. The more points you earn, the more chances you have to win.

  • Share the love and encourage other people to get involved to earn up to 100 extra points!

  • There are lots of prizes to be won by logging your rides with the app and encouraging others to get involved

  • There’s fun competition for workplaces too! Ride with your co-workers to top the leaderboards and bring bike fun into your workplace.

  • The Bike Month Challenge launches Love to Ride’s game-changing app. Or should we say ride-changing? The Love to Ride app not only helps to make biking better, but it also makes the Love to Ride experience easier and more fun!

How does it work?

The Bike Month Challenge aims to meet riders where they are in their riding journey. In addition to the app, our highly customized emails, badges, Quick Courses, and tips articles will help you overcome any barriers to riding you may have and will motivate you to ride more.

Here’s how to take part in the Bike Month Challenge:

  • Download Love to Ride and create your account. You’ll answer quick questions that assess your rider level: new, occasional or regular rider
  • Log rides automatically using the app. Or, you can sync another riding app, or log rides manually on your profile
  • Encourage others using the unique link on your profile or through the messages in your emails. If someone clicks on your link and rides, you’re automatically named as their encourager
  • Join your workplace to ride up the leaderboard with your co-workers

Safe Street Infrastructure is in DANGER!

We have a new Mayoral administration in place, and John Whitmire has proven himself to not be an ally to mobility minded folks like ourselves. Medians added to Houston Avenue at the Washington intersection this past December are planned to be removed. City Councilman Mario Castillo of District H has been vocal against this change, and joined protestors recently to let the Mayor know that this is a terrible idea. If you are interested in getting involved and speaking out against this (and future) step in the wrong direction, reach out to BikeHouston today!

The newly redesigned 11th street in the Heights is also at risk! Check out this video made by concerned citizens speaking about why they feel that safety improvements like these are quality of life improvements that should not be taken away.

Congratulations to BikeHouston,
League of American Bicyclists
Advocacy Organization of the Year!

from Bikeleague.org:

"This award goes to a bicycling and/or walking advocacy organization or club who, in the past year, made significant progress. Their leaders have worked tirelessly together to grow and strengthen their organization and fulfill their mission. The proof of their efforts is in the growth of their capacity, programs, membership and the victories they have achieved for biking and walking in their state/community. This award is about recognizing organizations that are inclusive, welcoming, and committed to growing bicycling."

This is a great piece of recognition, and we are happy to have the privilege of supporting BikeHouston for all that they do to create a more equitable landscape in the City of Houston for everyone that rides bicycles.

Help Create the White Oak Bayou Park!

From the Petition page:

"We are petitioning the city of Houston to formally designate the White Oak Greenway as a city park. This will preserve natural habitat for area wildlife, provide greenspace for public use, and prevent development on this land, including the expansion of freeways.

Without formal protection, this land is not protected and can be destroyed to make way for development. Currently TxDOT has plans to clear cut 28 acres of forest to construct a detention pond, raise the freeway by 90 ft., and place numerous elevated ramps over land that is currently used by wildlife and the public."

That's it for this round of updates, thanks for keeping up with us!
